Low Level Liquid Scintillation Counting of Radioactivity in Food Products

چکیده

The production rate is 7.5 kg isotope C-14 yearly. The C-14 concentration stays approximately constant due to rapid mixing of the atmosphere, although the cosmic intensity is higher at the poles due to the deflection of charged cosmic particles along the magnetic field lines of the earth (corresponding to neutron intensities in the ratio 5:1 at the poles and the equator, respectively). Consequently, C-14 atoms combine to form 'heavy' CO2, which, except in the radioactive decay (and isotopic fractionation effects), is indistinguishable from the ordinary carbon dioxide. The total amount of C-14 on earth in equilibrium is 62 tons, which is 10exp(-10) per cent of all carbon in biosphere, atmosphere and oceans.

The Radioactivity and Dose Assessment of Radioacarbon and Tritium in Graphite Waste Samples of the KRR-2

The radioactivity of C and H in graphite samples from the dismantled Korea Research Reactor-2 (the KRR-2) site was analyzed by high-temperature oxidation and liquid scintillation counting, and the graphite waste was suggested to be disposed of as a low-level radioactive waste. The graphite samples were oxidized at a high temperature of 800 degrees centigrade, and their counting rates were measu...

Use of Triton X-100 scintillant in a simple method for the simultaneous assay of 55Fe and 59Fe by liquid scintillation counting.

A method is described using Triton X-100 scintillant to simplify liquid scintillation counting of (55)Fe alone or in combination with (59)Fe. The Triton acts as an efficient solubilizing agent allowing small volumes of aqueous solutions of iron compounds in hydrochloric acid to be counted. The efficiencies achieved are comparable with those of previously described methods whilst the technique i...

A performance comparison of nine selected liquid scintillation cocktails.

Sample load capacity, sample compatibility, influence of sample load on (3)H/(14)C counting efficiency, background count rate, figure of merit, quench resistance, and sample stability for nine selected, commercially available, liquid scintillation cocktails are presented in this study. The cocktails tested are Ecoscint A, Insta-Gel Plus, OptiPhase Hisafe 3, OptiPhase Trisafe, Ready Gel, SafeSci...

Optimization Method to Determine Gross Alpha-Beta in Water Samples Using Liquid Scintillation Counter

Liquid scintillation counting (LSC) is an adequate nuclear technique to determine radioactivity levels, as verified by this study for the determination of the gross alpha and beta activities of aqueous samples because of its simplicity and low associated cost comparison with other techniques. This paper discusses a new approach to the monitoring of gross alpha and gross beta activities in water...
